Stage 1 Activities

These children can now solve addition and subtraction problems to 10 using their fingers, by counting from the first finger. They can explore numbers to 20, and start to group objects into tens.

• Use fingers to learn groupings to 5 and 10.

e.g  2 and ? make 5

6 and ? make 10

• Use fingers to solve addition and subtraction problems to 10.

4 and 3 is 1,2,3,4,5,6,7

• Play card games and dice games where children have to add up the numbers by counting the symbols or the dots.
• Cut up a calendar and get the children to place the numbers in the correct order on a grid or ruled up piece of paper.
