Health Promoting Schools
East Tamaki School is a Health Promoting
School. This means that we teach students
how to make healthy choices in what they
eat, how they choose to interact with others
and they deal with challenges and new
situations.
This health promotion focus can be seen
in:
- Our provision of Subway on Friday’s,
which is a healthy alternative to
takeaway food.
- Our Garden to Table programme, which
gives children knowledge about growing
and preparing healthy fruit and
vegetables.
- Our Values programme, which focuses on
our attitudes and behaviour towards
others.
- Our Kapai Gold Award system, which
encourages and values positive choices
made by the children.
- Our Caught Being Active Award system,
which encourages and values positive
physical activity choices made by the
children.

Enviroschools
This year the school became an
Enviroschool. One of the aims is for our
students to become more aware of the
environment around them and how to look
after it. The school was very fortunate to
have a large worm farm donated by Mercury
Energy. The school’s fruit and vegetable
scraps along with other ‘worm friendly’
material is put into the worm farm. The
worms turn this waste into compost which
will be used to feed our gardens.
Next year the school will be
involved in more recycling of paper and
plastic which will help with the school and
community environment. |

Home School Partnerships
There are many ways parents and families
can help.
Parents are very welcome to help at
school in the classroom listening to
children read, helping with art and sorting
equipment. Parents could also help around
the school with gardening.
OR: You may
have a skill that you can share with us,
and/or the children. Please talk to your
child’s teacher or speak to Ms Sarah Mirams
– the principal.
